Sometimes in life we experience that one (or multiple) relationships that, upon its conclusion, completely catches you off your guard. After finally emerging from my recent break up, I have spent the past year on a journey to find my sense of self. This piece is my journey back to my roots in traditional drag. I hope you enjoy.

Sarap

As Asians in Canada, it can feel like Food is our only way back home. We forget our language, leave our traditions and disconnect from our spirituality. For those people that don’t have that... um.. acquired taste, they’ll never understand the stories hidden within the ingredients, cooking method and in the very first bite. Stories that tell of our homeland, our bodies, our longing and our community. ‘Sarap’ is a horror recipe experience that everyone can follow. You’re invited to dinner. Bring Your Own Knives (BYOK).

This is a sarunay playing to MaryCarl’s poem "Atang for Apu." The piece reflects her working on properly mourning for her late Apu Liling, as well as, ongoingly for our authentic loves and roots bearers passed. All the music in her piece is grounded in kulintang music of the Maranao, Maguindanaon and T’boli peoples in colonized Philippines. Her playing the sarunay symbolizes the pathway she’s building that follows the art of survival, which is rooted in the nurturing, mending, soul-illuminating fruits indigenous to Our ancestors.
